I just saw 3:10 to Yuma. I thought it was great with great jobs done by everyone involved, especially Christian Bale and Russell Crowe. Unfortunately, the fact that the movie was a Western was apparently lost on some of my fellow audience members because as I left the theatre I overhood a few people lamenting the ending. “It was stupid” and “pointless.”
I guess they couldn’t appreciate the fact that the morality of the characters in the story weren’t black and white in the good versus evil sense. My understanding is that the morals of the good guys and bad guys are often ambiguous. And the hero not walking away at the end of the story certainly isn’t shocking.
